Danielle Connor, 23, who said she left the toddler unattended in the water for around 10 minutes, is now facing charges of child neglect.
The girl was rushed to hospital suffering from second and third-degree burns on 30 per cent of her body from the waist down. She is currently listed in a serious condition.
Connor of Washington County, Oklahoma, told police she had placed the toddler and her other three-year-old daughter in the bathtub at their home on Sunday night, reports NewsOk.com.
She then left the girls and went into another part of the property to do the laundry.
The mother said she had shut the door to the laundry room while the children were bathing and could not hearwhat was going on in the bathroom, according to the police report.
Her three-year-old came to the door to get Connor and the mother said she could hear the baby crying, but did not go to check on her right away assuming she was just upset over having a toy taken away from her.
When Connor eventually returned to the bathroom – an estimated 10 minutes later – she saw that the hot water had been turned on and the baby was screaming.
She said she lifted her daughter from the water ‘and the skin fell off her legs,’ according to the police report.
Dewey Police Chief Mike Shea said officers arrested Connor on complaints of child neglect and obstructing an officer as she had initially failed to tell the truth about the injuries, reports NewsOk.com
The child was taken to Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville before being flown to a burn unit in Kansas.
